Athirapally Waterfalls is around 75 kilometers from Kochi. This is one of the best waterfalls in India and one of the most famous tourist places in Kerala. Athirapally has now become one of the popular weekend getaways from Kochi, Coimbatore & Munnar. At Athirapally water falls from a height of more than 80 feet through several parallel streams. In monsoon, the water flow gets strength and all the streams join together and appear like Niagara Falls. The real beauty comes alive just after Monsoon so if you visit this place in September – November you can experience mesmerizing beauty.

Nestled on the edge of the Sholayar forest range, Athirapally is not merely a waterfall; it is a grand natural amphitheater where the Chalakudy River takes a dramatic plunge, throwing up a permanent shroud of mist that keeps the surrounding canopy perpetually verdant. For travelers looking to escape the concrete hum of South India's major hubs, this spectacular cascade represents the perfect weekend sanctuary. The wilderness here is dense and active, home to many endemic species of flora and fauna, making the journey to the falls as rewarding as the destination itself. The surrounding forests are famous as one of the few places in the Western Ghats where four distinct species of hornbills can be spotted, adding a touch of avian magic to the rich tropical backdrop.

My Personal Experience

I visited Athirapally waterfalls in November with my wife. We started our journey from Mumbai, flying down to Kochi before boarding our train to Ernakulam. We got down to Ernakulam railway station in the evening and then with our pre-booked cab started our journey to Athirapally. Though the distance is around 65 kilometers from the railway station, it took around 3 hours for us to reach our resort due to road conditions at that time. The drive, though long and bumpy, was incredibly atmospheric. As we left the coastal plains behind, the air grew cooler, and the scent of wet earth and wild cardamom began to draft through the windows. I hope that road conditions have improved now. We stayed at Bethania Resort. After having the delicious meal, we decided to take rest to prepare our self for the morning visit to Athirapally Waterfalls.

The night at the resort was incredibly tranquil, with the distant rumble of the waterfall serving as a soothing white noise that put us to sleep immediately. The next morning, we woke up early to the chirping of forest birds and the crisp mountain breeze. After having our breakfast (Upma, idli and wada) we left the hotel for Athirapally waterfall. The road from our hotel to Athirapally Waterfall was surrounded by lush greenery. Endless rows of rubber plantations and tropical forests lined the winding tarmac, with shafts of morning sunlight filtering through the dense green canopy.

After reaching the entrance, it took us 10 minutes walk to reach the waterfall. From the entrance, you will actually land on top of the waterfall, from where you can witness scenic beauty of the Sholayar hills and a unique view of the waterfall. People were enjoying the water stream. We were trying to figure out how to get to the bottom of the waterfall. Finally, we found the way and after trekking down for around 15 – 20 minutes we were right in front of Waterfall. We sat there for around 30 minutes just watching the waterfall and listening to the sound of the waterfall. The feeling was awesome.

Standing at the bottom of the falls, the sheer scale of Athirapally is humbling. The spray is so intense that it feels like a soft, continuous rain, immediately soaking our clothes and leaving droplets on our camera lenses. The roar of the water is deafening, yet strangely peaceful, drowning out every other sound in the world and forcing you to live entirely in the present moment. We watched the water churn violently into the pool below before continuing its journey down the Chalakudy River, eventually merging with the Arabian Sea. After capturing the memories in heart and camera we headed towards our next destination Vazhachal Waterfalls, as we had to reach Munnar on the same day after sightseeing.
